Dr. Patricia Lutfy, MD, DC, Diplomate American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers regenerative medicine and ultrasound-guided treatments for pain and injuries at KOI Wellbeing, La Jolla.
Get back to living pain free and doing what you love!
Among Dr. Lutfy’s specialties are Cell and Growth Factor -rich cord tissue injections (known in the media as “stem cell injections”), PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections, Amniotic Fluid (using AmnioFix and Amnio Shot) and Traumeel.
Treatment takes 30-45 minutes to administer and appointments are typically available within the week. Learn more about our cell products and treatments here.
About Regenerative Joint Therapy
Regenerative injections derived from donated cord blood, PRP and AmnioFix (amniotic fluid) injections use the patient’s own physical healing powers to create a bridge between conservative standard of care treatments such as cortisone, and surgery for musculoskeletal injuries and arthritis. They are relatively non-invasive and comparatively inexpensive. They have the potential to heal acute and chronic tendon, ligament, and cartilage injuries — torn meniscus, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tennis elbow among others — as well as arthritic joint pain.
Regenerative products have myriad applications for which we are seeing promising results.

PRP (platelet rich plasma) $600/first area $400/add-on area
Platelet-rich plasma therapy has made headlines, often because it is favored by elite athletes to help them recover from injury. Now this advanced, natural tissue building regenerative therapy is available to everyone as an outpatient procedure that takes just thirty minutes and no down time.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is concentrated from your blood, providing plasma that is rich in platelets and growth factors that stimulate a stem cell response. Clinical studies have demonstrated that PRP injections have improve function, heal tears and injuries and decrease pain from injuries, aging and stress, including – but not limited to – elbow, wrist, shoulder, hip, knee injuries, ankle tendonosis, and osteoarthritis.
PRP injections are prepared from one to a few tubes of the patient’s own blood with strict aseptic technique. After being centrifuged, the activated platelets are injected into the abnormal tissue, releasing growth factors that recruit and increase the proliferation of reparative cells. Dr. Lutfy uses ultrasound imaging to guide the injection.
Platelet activation plays a key role in the process of wound and soft tissue healing. The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a segregated potent portion of the patient’s own blood having a platelet concentration above baseline to promote healing and regeneration of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints, can be applied to various musculoskeletal problems.
Cord Derived Tissue Injections (commonly referred to as “stem cells”)$2,400/area
The use of umbilical cord blood stem cells and growth factors in regenerative medicine are vast. Cord blood is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells and mesenchymal stromal cells, similar to those found in bone marrow, and have the ability to develop into many different cell types.
These cells are attracted to the site of injury and signal healthy cells to regenerate new, healthier cells. Umbilical cord blood presents as a prolific source of cells, signaling proteins, and growth factors with potential benefits for use in regenerative medicine (Damien and Allan 2015). It contains hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), and endothelial cells (Roura, Pujal, Galvez-Moon 2015).
MSCs can help with inflammation modulatory response, release various growth factors, and can help supplement various connective tissue repair needs. Endothelial stem cells will form the lining of blood and lymph vessels and help vascularize tissue, making endothelial cells an increasingly compelling interest in the orthopedic applications (Atesok et al. 2012) and ischemic damage (Au et al. 2008). Amniotic Fluid Injections $800/area (40mg) $1200/area (100mg)
The amniotic membrane injection uses a dehydrated form of human amniotic membrane. These tissues provide a non-steroidal mechanism to alleviate pain through reducing inflammation.
The fluid contains growth factors that promote the generation of new tissue and call in the body’s stem cells, anti-inflammatory properties including cytokines that relieve pain and hyaluronic acid, a prominent component of joint fluid that lubricates the area and promotes the growth of new cartilage. Hyaluronic acid is the main component of viscosupplementation injections with the highly effective but less safe Synvisc and Hyalgan medicines.
Amniotic fluid is by nature anti-microbial and is able to prevent and eliminate potential infectious agents and the injection substance is derived from live willing donors and does not involve any fetal tissue. Learn more about this incredible product here: Amniofix Video Link
Traumeel injections $295 first area or $50 as an add-on to any other injection
Traumeel is is a fixed combination of diluted plant and mineral extracts used to treat acute musculoskeletal injuries, such as sprains and traumatic injuries, and as supportive therapy in pain and inflammation of the musculoskeletal system. It can be used alone for pain and inflammation or combined with PRP or AmnioFix as an adjunct to those regenerative treatments for more immediate pain relief.
Developed by the German physician, Dr Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg in the 1930’s, Traumeel injections are very popular among individuals who suffer from pain that is preventing them from leading a full and active lifestyle. It’s a safe and natural alternative to cortisone and anti-inflammatory medications and is frequently used for athletes in season with a quick recovery time or following regenerative treatments to resolve any lingering inflammation post procedure.
