Stem Cell Injections & Stem Cell rich Products
Administered by Dr. Patricia Lutfy, MD, DC, Diplomate in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. These regenerative stem cell- rich therapies represent the most advanced treatments for pain and injuries.
What to expect: The treatment is straightforward. Book an appointment with Dr. Lutfy online (below) or by calling our office. The doctor will speak with you about your injury or pain and goals, perform a physical assessment and ultrasound (if appropriate) and tell you if you are a candidate for benefiting from stem cell therapy.
If stem cell treatment is right for you the doctor will set a date for you to return for the injection and order product. We don’t stock product at KOI because it has to be cryogenically frozen after harvest and lasts only 72 hours- the product is vibrant.
On your appointment date Dr. Lutfy will use an ultrasound to guide a common gauge needle into the area being treated. The entire procedure takes about 35 minutes to treat most areas, such as knees, shoulders, hands and necks. The injections can be uncomfortable during the process but the pain will begin to subside after the stem cell product is injected.
The doctor will then use her expertise to massage and manipulate the treatment area and circulate the injected stem cell product within the tissue. Patients typically enjoy this because it’s therapeutic, calming and creates more comfort.

Down Time: After treatment the doctor will give you instructions specific to your treatment regarding exercises and when you can return to any strenuous physical activities. Downtime can vary from just a few days to a few weeks depending on the severity of your injury or cause of pain. The great majority of people treated will are able to walk out just as they walked in but with increased discomfort around the injection site and return to work the next day- unless the reason for treatment had you out of work prior to treatment.
Feeling Improvement: People that see improvement from stem cell therapy usually start to feel better over the course of three to 12 weeks as the tissue begins to regenerate. Those that engage in prescribed exercises and physical therapy see the most improvement, and success is predicated on your willingness to adhere to what the doctor prescribes or recommends post treatment.
Severe injuries and issues often require more than one treatment and as many as four. Each of us is unique and the doctor will tell you what treatment regimen is right for you based on your initial assessment and followup visits after your first treatment.
KOI Wellbeing Offers Two Stem Cell Presentation Options
Your doctor will determine which is right for you based on your goals and whether for injury, pain, hair restoration or other goals. Both of these are injectable products:
Wharton’s Jelly: A gel-like tissue in injectable form that has unique characteristics of providing structural support in the body and may be preferred over amniotic membrane or amniotic fluid in many instances because it contains up to 50 times higher concentration of long-chain hyaluronic acid and growth factors. Wharton’s Jelly products contain mesenchymal stem cellular tissue, growth factors and other essential components necessary for regeneration. It consists of high amounts of extracellular matrix components, high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, collagen, and thousands of structural proteins, growth factors and cytokines which are essential to healing and growth.
Cord Blood Allograft: This product is an injectable extracted from a graft of the cord tissue and a prolific source of stem cells, signaling proteins, and growth factors with benefits for use in regenerative medicine. It contains hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), and endothelial cells. MSCs can help with inflammation modulatory response, release various growth factors, and can help supplement various connective tissue repair needs. Endothelial stem cells will form the lining of blood and lymph vessels and help vascularize tissue, making endothelial cells an increasingly compelling interest in the orthopedic applications and ischemic damage.
About the Product: KOI Wellbeing uses the safest and highest quality stem cell rich cord blood products on the market. The cost for stem cell therapy in our San Diego office is $2400 per cc. A typical joint requires one cc. Larger areas or more complex injuries can require more.
After a baby is born, cord blood is left in the umbilical cord and placenta. It is relatively easy to collect, with no risk to the mother or baby and contains haematopoietic (blood) stem cells , the powerful and rare cells normally found in the bone marrow. These cells are attracted to the site of injury and signal healthy cells to regenerate new, healthier cells.
Cord blood donors are pre-screened and the tissue is processed in an aseptic laboratory environment to ensure it is free from contamination caused by harmful bacteria, viruses or other microorganisms. It is minimally processed in accordance with FDA regulations, AATB accreditation standards and to align with FDA Guidance Documents on Current Good Tissue Practices (CGTP), Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
